Revolutionizing Illumination: Megurogawa Minna no Illumination

CreativeOut's Innovative Energy Solution Lights Up Tokyo

Inspired by the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, CreativeOut's Megurogawa Minna no Illumination project is a testament to resilience, unity, and innovation. This award-winning design is more than just a spectacle; it's a beacon of hope and a symbol of sustainable energy solutions.

The 2011 earthquake and subsequent Fukushima nuclear accident left Japan in a state of crisis, with power-saving measures becoming a necessity. Despite this, Tokyo's central district continued its tradition of Christmas illumination, seemingly oblivious to the struggles of the Tohoku district, which was directly affected by the earthquake. This stark contrast inspired CreativeOut to develop a design that would not only illuminate Tokyo but also address the pressing issue of energy conservation.

The Megurogawa Minna no Illumination project is unique in its approach to energy use. Instead of relying on traditional power sources, the project uses a new energy solution - biodiesel fuels derived from waste oil collected from households and restaurants in the area. This innovative approach to energy use not only conserves power but also promotes recycling and waste management.

The illumination display, which features approximately 420,000 LED lights in a unique sakura color, is a sight to behold. But more than its visual appeal, the project serves as a unifying force within the community. With support from the government and donations from regional companies, the project has turned into a community effort, with local residents and restaurants providing the waste oil needed for the biodiesel fuels.

Since its inception in 2011, the project has been a fixture along the Megurogawa River in Tokyo for seven years. It has not only provided a new perspective on energy use but also enlightened the public about alternative energy choices. The project's success proves that local production and consumption of energy are possible, paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future.

The Megurogawa Minna no Illumination project is not just an illumination display; it's a symbol of resilience, unity, and innovation. It's a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together to address a pressing issue. And for its innovative approach to energy use and community involvement, the project was awarded Silver in the A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2017.
